FISH ON!
The Salmon & Trout Association
by Paul Knight, Deputy Director, Salmon & Trout Association
The S & TA is the only national body devoted solely to representing the interests of game anglers.
We are primarily a political lobbying organisation on all matters relevant to safeguarding game angling. We also have an expanding role in environmental issues, education and training, and a close link with the S & TA Charitable Trust which supports relevant conservation research work into game species and habitat enhancement.
Current issues include:
Water Resources - we are the only UK organisation to monitor every application to discharge or abstract water, and actively fight licence consents where necessary
Predation - S & TA is leading the fight for responsible management plans for cormorants, saw-billed ducks and seals, and is a core member of the MAFF/DoE Committee currently researching the subject
Brown Trout - S & TA Charitable Trust is helping to finance research into natural habitat enhancement in Wiltshire and parasitic worm infestations in Scotland
Sea Trout - we are heavily involved in the politics of sea trout collapses in both Ireland and Scotland, and actively support the Scottish West Coast Trusts set up to tackle the problem
Salmon - we are fighting for an end to all commercial netting of salmon, and are currently supporting enquiries into Net Limiting Orders in Wales and SW England
Stillwaters - we have negotiated a unique package of heavily discounted fishing for S & TA members on major reservoirs and small stillwaters
Education and Training - we work closely with REFFIS and APGAI through our STANIC Instructors' scheme to expand professional instruction throughout the UK
We currently represent 15,000 members and 350 clubs, making a total of some 100,000 game anglers who rely on the S & TA to safeguard the future of their sport. If you are not among them, we desperately need your support NOW.
